In 2019 I got in touch with Lalli again. This time my wife and I wanted to rent a bike and travel to Uttarakhand. We rented a 350 Electra. The bike was great and Lalli and his crew did a very good job to help us prepare the journey. They equipped us with all the tools and spare parts that we might need on the trip. They also gave us good advice on how to plan the trip, what time during the day is best for riding, and other things.
After two exciting (and quite tiresome) days on the crowded roads between Delhi and the Himalayas, we finally got to Rishikesh. Traffic has certainly increased since the 1990s! From then on, the roads were much less crowded and we could enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Himalayan foothills, We encountered a couple of landslides up there, since the rainy season had begun. After clearing the site for some time, a narrow path was formed upon the stones and rocks that covered the road. At this point the roadworkers allowed pedestrians and two.wheelers to pass. To drive on top of the slide like that was quite scary. The roads up in the mountains are awesome, and it is really great to go by motorcycle. On the way back we passed through Mussoorie, Dehra Duun and Rorkee. In Rorkee we met the main road between Haridwar and Dehli. This road was packed with what seemed like millions and millions of trucks, pedestrians and motorcycles, The pedestrians had little clothing and many of them had only Safran coloured pants or a loincloth. They carried bottles or cans of water and not much else. The trucks were all jammed with people in the cargo space, many of them dancing and shouting happily to each other. In the rear the trucks had giant racks of loudspeakers mounted, from where the beat of modern Indian music filled the air, on the highest volume you could imagine. It was like suddenly this large road had been turned into a party, bigger and more intense than you ever could imagine possible. The party lasted from Rorkee to Delhi, a distance of around 200 km. It was the Shivratry, one of the biggest festivals in northern India. The water carried by the pedestrians was from the Ganga river. They brought it to the temple closest to where they lived.
When we arriwed in Delhi, we were exhausted and the time was almost 1 a.m. We had been in the road party for almost twelve hours. We are very thankful to Lalli and his crew for making it possible for us to carry out this trip and for helping us in many more ways than could be expected! It was a great experience.
